San Antonio Tricentennial Commemorative Week

A year of festivities and celebrations will culminate in a week of commemorative events, topping off San Antonio’s 300th year. The joy and pride of the city will be harnessed into a week filled with distinctive events, unlike any the city has ever known, to showcase the collective essence of San Antonio.

May 1: Day of Reflection will engage all faith-based communities and set the tone for commemorative week and the next 300 years with a community candlelight vigil and sunset services, emanating from the heart of San Antonio’s historic Main Plaza. 
 
May 2: History & Education initiatives activated with public and private schools, parochial, and home-school students, throughout the academic year, will culminate with special exhibits on display at libraries, schools, college campuses and museums. A Tree-centennial program will launch this date with plantings of 300 trees at various higher education institutions. 
 
May 3: Founders Day will celebrate San Antonio’s shared, multinational culture by focusing on founding mothers and fathers for the Founders Gala. 
 
May 4: Arts for All celebrates this community’s distinctive culture, heritage and diversity through the arts.  Museums, art venues, theatres, etc. will offer a complimentary day, open to the public. Shows, concerts, dance and art with Tricentennial-centric programming premier on this day.  The Tricentennial Public Art piece will be unveiled.
 
May 5: Legacy Day will honor the contributions of the missions in San Antonio: Alamo, Espada, San Jose, Concepcion, and San Juan as a World Heritage site. A variety of art and culture programming will be available at each of the sites. Five miles of musical entertainment, health and fitness opportunities, historical facts, and tours will all culminate with fireworks at all five missions. The San Antonio River Authority will also dedicate the transformation of San Pedro Creek as a cultural park!
 
May 6: Military Appreciation initiatives, designed to highlight the city’s rich military history, will showcase active duty military and past and current missions of Joint Base San Antonio.

Stone Oak POA Neighborhood Representative Committee Meeting
Wednesday, May 9th, 2018, 7pm at Club at Sonterra
 
The Neighborhood Representative Committee (NRC) meetings are one hour in length, and take place the second Wednesday of each month at 7PM at the Club at Sonterra.  (Meetings are not held in December or January)
 
Each meeting starts with a presentation of interest.  Past presentations have included SAWS, SAPD, CPS, TXDOT, The City of San Antonio Transportation and Capital Improvements Department, Parks & Wildlife, etc.  
 
Many of these organizations have come to rely on this group to spread important notices throughout our Stone Oak community (such as the recent mail thefts, water main breaks, or street improvements.)  Please check our "Neighborhoods of Stone Oak" page to see if a representative is listed for your neighborhood.  If not, please consider volunteering.  Call the office at 210-490-9481 for more info.

REAGAN ORCHESTRA WINS HONORABLE MENTION IN AMERICAN PRIZE:
The Reagan High School Chamber Orchestra won Honorable Mention in the American Prize, an annual national competition designed to recognize and reward the very best of performing arts in the US.  The Reagan Orchestra competed nationally via recorded orchestral performance in the High School Orchestra Division.  Criteria for winners are wide ranging and include musicality, rhythmic incisiveness, tone quality, intonation, among others.  An Honorable Mention in the company of the finalist programs and Directors is indeed an honor.  Congratulations to Mr. Sixto Elizondo, Mr. Nathan Sharplin, and the Chamber Orchestra!
 
REAGAN ORCHESTRA WINS STRONG PRESENCE IN TMEA REGION PERFORMANCE:
Members of the Reagan High School Orchestra auditioned for selection in the Texas Music Educators Association All Region Orchestra. Competitive and accomplished Reagan Orchestra students won 24 seats in the top Region Symphony Orchestra and nine seats in the Philharmonic Orchestra. Reagan High School scored 24 seats, nearly double the number of any other orchestra in the region!

On Thursday May 17th the Bexar County Sheriff's Office will honor our fallen Deputies who gave the ultimate sacrifice while in the line of duty. You are invited to attend the 2018 Bexar County Sheriff's Office Memorial For Fallen Deputies at the Lady Justice Plaza, North side of the Courthouse located at 100 Dolorosa SA, TX 78205. The service will start at 10 am.
Reagan HS Annual Powder Puff Flag Football Game
Friday, May 18th, 2018, 5pm at Ronald Reagan High School
 
May 18th, the Reagan Dancers and Cheerleaders will be playing in the 11th annual Powder Puff Flag Football game. 
 
Senior spirit girls will compete against their Junior classmates for the Powder Puff crown.  Please join us to celebrate these young women who support our athletic teams and school all year round. 
 
Pre-game activities start about 5:00 p.m. with kick-off at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at the Reagan campus football field. 
 
Select Reagan football players will be coaching the Junior and Senior spirit teams. 
 
Heather Stolle's Xlr8 Dance team will perform at half-time along with special guest appearances that you won't want to miss.  
 
Tickets are $4 for students and $5 for adults at the gate. 
 
Our amazing spirit dads will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, so come hungry.  Meals are $6 which also includes chips and a drink. 
 
We hope to see you at the football game.

Proceeds from art sales will go towards the care of the homeless pets at the Animal Defense League of Texas. Your dog is welcome to join you, just make sure they’re well-behaved in crowds and updated on their rabies vaccination. 10% of art sales benefit the homeless pets at ADL.

Armed Forces River Parade
Saturday, May 19th, 2018, All Day Event at San Antonio River Walk
 
This parade, dedicated to the men and women of the United States Armed Forces, features 26 patriotically-decorated floats carrying all branches of military personnel. The parade theme is patriotic music and will play from all the floats. View the parade for free from anywhere downtown on the River Walk. On-stage entertainment will serenade the floats through the Arneson River Theatre. This is one of the largest parades held on the River Walk. It is televised live locally and syndicated in over 25 markets throughout the United States including the Pentagon Channel. The presenting event sponsor is Budweiser.

If you watch Tiny House Nation then you don't want to miss the CCA Tiny Home Showcase.  This year’s CCA Tiny Home Showcase is just around the corner on May 19th, gates open at 9am. 

 

The Tiny Homes Showcase is sponsored by Northside ISD's Construction Careers Academy.  The Academy is a 4 year public school that trains students in the areas of electrical, HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, architecture, construction management and applied engineering.  It is public education impacting workforce development through training students in the field of construction.  The Showcase is a culmination of what they have learned and serves as an opportunity to showcase their skills.  For more information on the project visit www.nisd.net/cca/homes.

The May District 9 Neighborhood Alliance meeting will be held at 7:00PM, Wednesday, May 23rd.  (Meetings are always held the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Stone Oak Methodist Hospital, (Classrooms #1&2), 1139 E. Sonterra Blvd. (just off Hwy 281 in Stone Oak).
 
 
 
Directions:
If you are coming north on Hwy 281, go under Loop 1604 and immediately take the Sonterra Blvd. exit to the right; cross over to the right and follow the signs to Sonterra Blvd.; at the top of the hill take a right on to Sonterra Blvd., proceed through the first traffic light, at the next traffic light you will see the hospital on your right.
 
If you are coming around Loop 1604 westbound, take the Stone Oak Parkway exit, go north on Stone Oak Parkway and turn right on Sonterra Blvd.; proceed east on Sonterra through the traffic light at Hardy Oak and you will see the hospital on your left.
 
Park as close to the main entrance as possible, go through the Benson Pavilion entrance and the classrooms are to your left. We will be in Classrooms #1&2.
District 9 HOA and NA Presidents Meeting
